MAN 015 Formosa Island and the Pescadores

Antique engraved map of Formosa (today Taiwan) by General C W Le Gendre, 1870 from one of his books about the non-Chinese tribes.  Le Gendre was US Consul in  Amoy and Formosa but  worked also for the Chinese and later Japanese governments.

Folded as issued, re-attached paper lower left-hand corner and loss of parer in the lower margin, discoloration along some folds.  SOLD

Map of the Kingdom of Siam and its dependencies.  Antique colour   lithographed map by H Sharbau, showing Thailand according to Siamese   Government surveys; the northern boundary is indeterminate, but the kingdom   includes modern day Laos and parts of Cambodia and Malaysia.  From the Proceedings of the Royal   Geographical Society, 1888.  476 x 614   mm.  Very good condition, some fraying   of the edges of the margins and folds to fit the journal of the RGS.   $A250.

Vast antique engraved map in two sheets covering all of East Asia from the mouth of the Ganges to West New Guinea and from Tartary and Korea to Timor.by Franz Anton Schraembl. Dated 1786 in the plate. From his large and spectacular “Allgemeiner deutscher Atlas aller Länder”, Vienna 1786-94  He acknowledges a debt to d’Anville but provides fuller geographical information.

Each map 478 x 675 mm (18 ¾ x 26 ½ in)
Original outline colour. Excellent condition except for signs of handling in lower right hand corner of outer margin and an unobtrusive fold along left hand border of one map.                                                                                           SOLD

MAC 006 Asia with the Islands adioyning described

Antique engraved map of the Asian continent, in a decorative border with miniature bird’s eye views of Asian cities and , down the sides, costumes of the inhabitants of various parts of Asia. Dated in the plate 1626 , English text on verso.

By John Speed, from his Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World, published 1627-1676 (probably the 1627 or 1631/32 edition as it bears the name of the publisher George Humble). This was the first world atlas produced by an Englishman

John Speed (1152-1629) is the most famous of all English map-makers and author of the Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine published in 1612. Speed imitated the style of the famous Dutch map makers and had his plates engraved in Amsterdam (this one is signed by Abraham Goos).

404 x 512 mm.

Especially attractive contemporary colouring. Very good condition (top margin reinforced and tear has been repaired –visible only on verso)
